Obituary of Robert W. Medlock DVM

Bedford Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Medlock, DVM, 83, of Bedford, IN. He was a man that embodied the values of duty, honor, integrity, respect, service, commitment, and love. I have nothing to prove, nothing to hide, hold no grudges, and put my faith in God, he used to say. It is with these thoughts that the family of Bob Medlock announces his passing. He was born September 17, 1924, the thirteenth child of Jack and Emma (Smith) Medlock. He married Barbara Hammond on June 14, 1947. After graduation from Needmore High School in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on a combat aircrew, top turret gunner, in Navy Squadron VPB-139, Pat Wing Four on Attu, Aleutian Islands, with bombing missions over the Pacific Kurile Islands. After service, he attended college on the GI Bill, graduating from Michigan State University with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1954. He returned to Lawrence County and, with his brother, John, established the Northside Animal Hospital which became the Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre. Dr. Medlock practiced veterinary medicine in Lawrence and surrounding counties for 32 years. He retired from his veterinary practice in 1986. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Hammond Medlock; two sons, Stephen (Ricci-wife) Medlock, DVM of Bloomington, Jeffrey (Kate-wife) Medlock of Bedford, IN, daughter Rebecca (Don-husband) Medlock Johnson of Bloomington, IN; five grandsons, Tyson (Kristen-wife) Medlock, DVM of Lafayette, IN, Tanner Medlock of Mitchell, IN, Tate Medlock of Greenwood, IN, Bradley Burns of Longmont, CO, and Cpl Cody Medlock, U.S. Marine Corps; three granddaughters, Ashley Medlock, U.S. Air Force, Emily Medlock of Bloomington, IN and Brigette Burns Doering of Bloomington, IN; two great grandchildren, Cailey and Nick Doering of Bloomington, IN; two brothers, identical-twin, John (Viola-wife) Medlock, DVM (retired) of Bedford, IN, Charles (Sharon-wife) Medlock of Anderson, IN; and two sisters, Charlotte Amick of Needmore, IN, and Barbara (Kermit-husband) Williams of Bedford, IN. Uncle Bob will be missed by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack (1881-1949) and Emma (1884-1946); brothers, Lesta, Chester and Hilbert; sisters, Vanna, Ina, Gleeda and three infant sisters. He believed in the importance of family and included family members in his hobbies, which created wonderful memories of photography, fishing, gardening and flying. He received his private pilot license in 1960. Dr. Medlock served as a director of the Bedford Boys Club. He also served on the Bedford City Park Board. He served twice on the Lawrence County Tax Adjustment Board. In 1965, during the Lawrence County school reorganization, he was appointed member at large on the Interim Board of School Trustees, and he served as president of the board. He also served as president of the first elected School Board of Trustees of the North Lawrence School Corporation and served 6 years as a board member. He was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church. He held memberships in Rotary, the Elks, Bedford Masonic Lodge 14 F & AM, the York Rite and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He is a member of the Murat Temple and a member of the LAORMA Shrine Club. He had life memberships in the American Legion Post #33, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #15015, and the Bedford Fraternal Order of Police, Stone City Lodge#94. He also held life memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Indiana State Veterinary Medical Association, and the 9th District AVMA. He was a member of the Needmore Alumni Association and served one year as president. In addition, he held a life membership in the Michigan State University Alumni Association. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 4th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Steven Manley officiating. Burial will follow in the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, March 3rd at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion.
