I knew Fred and his partner in life from waiting on them many times at The Goldrush. Although I stopped working there in 1994, and have no specific memory except lots of laughter, when I saw his obit in the paper it sparked an enormous feeling of great affection. Bless you, Fred! Joan White

Mr. Cline was one of my favorite teachers. I knew he cared for us as students, and that he was truly invested in our education and in us. I remember looking forward to going to his class because he made it enjoyable and at the same time informative and useful. What a privilege it was to have had him as my teacher.

Mr. Cline was my favorite teacher. He took the time to learn how each of us understood things when most didn't care to. Always with a smile or something silly to make me laugh. He made me want to work harder. Bless you all. You'll be in my thought and heart. ❤️

Mr. Cline was an exceptional teacher and mentor. Among his qualities I admired were his businesslike professionalism as a young and new teacher in our school district and how he demonstrated no favoritism to students in his classes. Among his actions and our interactions that I most vividly remember were his reading aloud of an in-class essay I'd written in answer to his question about whether it is better to win or to lose--and why--and him taking me aside in the hallway outside his classroom door one day to suggest I could take greater advantage of the platform I had as editor of "The Artesian Herald" to say something--or a whole schoolyear of things--in editorials that could be serious and important instead of fluff and filler. Without Mr. Cline's confidence in me and courage to speak in a way that spurred me to worry less and write more and better, I might not have been brave enough to share that essay--it mentioned Jesus Christ, for heaven's sake--or to write editorials critical of students and school and suggestive of changes we might make. Thirtysome years later, I attended the funeral of our high school principal and took the opportunity to thank Fred Cline for his quiet encouragement. Such a pleasure to see him there, surrounded by seated colleagues, and to have the opportunity to convey my longheld (but, until then, silent) appreciation.

While I did not have Mr Cline in class, I did go with the group he Chaperoned to England over Spring Break 1989. He was so knowledgeable of the areas we toured and helped to bring it alive! Condolences to his family. He had a life well lived and was an inspiration to many young minds.

Mr. Cline was one of my favorites!! He was a great teacher with a great sense of humor!! The funniest story I remember is when someone passed gas in class, it was bad!!! He asked that all the smokers light their lighters! Nothing would be confiscated! I remember singing in class with a couple friends and he applauded after we finished!! The world needs more of Mr. Cline! 1988 graduate!!

MHS grad 1976 -- the only year I attended there. Mr. Cline was an exceptional teacher, highlighting English literature and the history that accompanied it. I often wondered if I were in an English class or a History class! He also provided valuable training in writing a good essay. And most interestingly, he sprinkled in several valuable life lessons as well. I was actually going through some old boxes this evening and stumbled across my English history notes from his class -- which I saved because they were quite informative. How odd to find his obituary notice, just a few hours later! Sad news to hear indeed.
For his stellar performance as an educator, and for the many ways he helped prepare his students for the future, it only seems appropriate to honor Mr. Cline with a bit of Shakespeare. I hope this selection is acceptable.
"My sick heart shows
That I must yield my body to the earth,
And, by my fall, the conquest to my foe.
Thus yields the cedar to the axe's edge,
Whose arms gave shelter to the princely eagle;
Under whose shade the ramping lion slept:
Whose top-branch overpeer'd Jove's spreading tree,
And kept low shrubs from winter's powerful wind."

I was a student of Mr Cline’s in 1987, senior English. He impacted my life in so many ways, as I know he did many others. Through the decades since then I have often thought of him and the life lessons he taught. Some of those include how to properly set a table, how to properly hang a pair of trousers (I think of him every time I hang my trousers in my closet), how to tie a tie (I just passed that lesson on to my 13 year old son), and proper manners at the dinner table and beyond. We enjoyed the beauty and culture of the English country side under his careful watch that Spring, and that trip inspired much curiosity in me for travel and the bounty of other cultures. He will be greatly missed, and his legacy will live on for generations to come. I am proud to carry a little bit of his light within me.
