Obituary of Donald Henderson

Bedford-Donald Gordon Henderson, 79, of Bedford, died at Hearthstone Health Campus on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024. Don practiced law in Bedford, Indiana for forty-two years from 1973-2015. He worked for decades with his father, Gordon R. Henderson at their law office, Henderson and Henderson Attorneys. Don graduated from Bedford High School in 1964. He received his B.S. from the school of Business, Indiana University in 1968, and his Juris Doctor from Indiana University in 1971. Don received admission to the Indiana State Bar in 1971. He was an ROTC officer at Indiana University and was appointed to Lieutenant in Army Field Artillery and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was detailed to the JAG Corps from Artillery and practiced law for the Army. He began his legal career in Bedford in 1973 in both private practice and working in the public defender's office. Don was appointed Trustee for the Federal Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Indiana, in New Albany, Indiana in 1988 and served until 2011. This was a particular point of pride for Don, as he could often be seen casually wearing a blue knit vest bearing the seal of the court. He also sat on Moot Court at the Indiana University School of Law. Don was a board member for both Dunn Hospital and Stone City Bank and served on the Lawrence County Election Board. He was also an avid golfer. Don also was a private pilot instructor, where he learned to fly at age 11. He would often tow aerial signage over events in Bloomington, in addition to giving flying lessons and hustling pool at the student union during his college years. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon R. Henderson and Helen (Evans) Henderson. He is survived by his son, Matt. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Day & Carter Mortuary, and from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Friday, June 28, at Day & Carter Mortuary. The graveside service for Don will be a time to reflect and honor a life well lived. Stories and memories will be shared and encouraged by those in attendance.
