I am sorry to hear about Jim's passing. Having known Jim through my time leading the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, I had a chance to witness his kind attitude and his willingness to try out musical ideas. He was always good to his trumpet colleagues and had a lovely disposition to the rest of the orchestra as well. Sending my best wishes to the rest of the family! ~Alejandro

I have known Jim ever since I was in junior high school. When Jim found out I played piano, he would grab his trumpet and walk over to our house and we would play music for hours. It would sometimes get so long my mother would ask Jim, "Do you need a ride home!" Jim would answer, "No, I'm good!". These "jam sessions" continued throughout the years. Jim would often call and say, "Mikey, let's play!" Jim played at our church for Christmas Eve and Palm Sunday for many, many years. We played in the Bedford Community Band together and more recently the Nostalgia Band. I will miss you so much Jimmy, but I know you are now playing trumpet in heaven along with Roger Gales and our old mentor, Wayne Anderson. Gabriel has some serious competition!

Jim played trumpet with my husband Hugh's piano for years. Jim loved to play music just for the sheer joy of it and hear the piano play along. Jim enjoyed really putting feelings into his music and making it the best he could. Later, at the Christian church, he convinced our organist, Mary Ruth, that trumpet and violin could sound good together, so we played some duets for church. He loved everyone and esp. his sweet dogs. Play pretty in heaven. He will be missed.

To have encountered Jim is truly a blessing. His impressive performance and improvisation were memorable. Conversations revealed a depth that were truly God given. My words of salutation each time I greeted him were sincere and simple. “We are not worthy!” God blessed him and all he encountered with song. Peace be with us.

My family moved to Bedford in 1959 when my dad, Wayne Anderson, became the Band Director for the Bedford Schools. Jim was in the high school band at that time and my dad saw the musical talent Jim had and encouraged and mentored him. He had great admiration for Jim and they were friends throughout my dad's life. When my dad was in failing health, Jim would bring his trumpet and sheet music to his house and they would play their trumpets together. It was such a beautiful time they had together. When my dad passed away, Jim played "Trumpeter's Lullaby" at the funeral and it was so beautful and he played it with such emotion. I'll never forget it. Jim was such a wonderful person and I'm blessed to have known him. Prayers of comfort to all who knew and loved him. I bet he and my dad are playing their trumpets in heaven together right now. I met Jim in Aug. 1973 and we have been good friends for all that time. He called me Tues. night and I tried to return his call on Wed. He may have already been gone. The best time we ever had together was when we went to see Elvis at IU. We sat right above the band and he loved it. Also, his former Band Director at BHS was Wayne Anderson. Wayne mentored JIm and got him to fall in love with the trumpet. Wayne loved him like a son and up until Wayne's health deteriorated did they stop spending time together. Jim played the trumpet at Wayne's funeral, with tears falling the entire time. Jim & I sometimes went for long periods without contact, but no matter how long it had been since the last time, it was as if no time had passed at all. Jim was so much fun to be with and made me laugh every time I ever saw him. He loved all his animals (dogs & cats) over the years, and most times when he came to visit would bring one with him. We had a long list of mutual friends, mostly other musicians. As far as I've ever heard, they all loved him and he loved them too. You couldn't find a more true friend and if you knew Jim you were greatly blessed. He loved his family very much and valued the time he had with all of them too. He is going to leave a long line of sorrow because no one who knew him would have wanted to lose him. He always tried to make me laugh and we laughed together often. I am going to miss him greatly but glad he is at peace now, and thankful for every minute we got to spend together. I can still remember his laughter and will treasure the memory of all the times he made me laugh. Condolences to Jim's family, I will remember all of you in prayer and I thank you for sharing him with all his friends. I am blessed to have known Jim.

My condolences to Jim's family and friends. I played trumpet with him in the Bloomington Community Band for almost 30 years. I also remember going to see him play with the Dynamics. He was a great trumpet player and fun to be around. I moved away for a while and returned last year and was so glad to see Jim still in the band. He will be very much missed from the groups he played in. It will be hard to return to rehearsals and not have there to great me with his Hi JImbo.

Jimmy and I played together in several bands throughout the past four decades, and we sat next to one another for a majority of that time. We undoubtedly sat side-by-side for thousands of hours of rehearsals and performances over the years, and there was never a dull moment! He was a great fellow musician and friend. His passing is truly the end of an era, and I will miss him tremendously. RIP brother James. Doug McDaniel

Jim and my father, Alan Walker, played in the Nostalgia Band together for many years. Dad always referred to Jim as gifted with the trumpet. Jim also played many Christmas Eves at the 1st Presbyterian Church to everyone's pleasure and thanks. A special memory for me is when he was chauffeur for Bloomington friends in his convertible following their wedding. It was his gift to them. Such fun that evening and Jim made it a beautiful memory my friends and I still share. You will be missed, Jim.

Jim was an incredible man and a someone I really looked up to as a musician. Hearing him play only ever made me want to be better. What I wouldn’t give to sit next to him and listen to him make wise cracks all through rehearsal just one more time. He’s going to be dearly missed.

I played in the Bloomington and Bedford Community Bands with Jim and he was one of the nicest, most welcoming people to me. He learned my name and always had a smile. I came to appreciate his "noodling" around before band began and I always marveled at the sweet tone. I could always tell if he was there or not . I play the flute so normally I can't see the trumpet players. He always had a kind word and I doubt if he ever realized how much that kindness meant to me. I will miss him.
