Obituary of Peggy Jean Henry

Peggie (Peggy) Jean Rice was born on December 11, 1936, in Pike County, Missouri to Donald and Edna (Hopp) Rice. Peggy’s siblings were Donald (Sonny) Rice (Velma) of Texas, Carol Shertzer (Bruce) of West Lafayette, Sharon Pate of Bloomington, and Diane Rice of Solsberry, Indiana. All, but Sharon, preceded her in death. Peggy was a sweet, kind, and generous woman who worked hard to support her family and self. Peggy grew up in Solsberry, Indiana, where she graduated from high school. She lived her life in southern Indiana. She married and raised her boys, cared for family, and made friends while working at RCA, but she spent most of her career as a UAW member working at, and retiring from, General Motors in Bedford. Judy Chandler was a dear friend she met during her years at GM. Peggy and then-husband, Bill Henry, became friends with Judy and her husband, and that friendship endured many years and many games of cards. Peggy was a gifted quilter, and the quilts she shared with family and friends are treasures, often made from scraps of fabric repurposed from childhood and special occasion clothes. Her creations have become keepsakes, passed along now for several generations. All through the years, her true best friend, Judy, was there with Peggy for the good times and lots of fun, and she was also there for the challenges, assisting and helping to care for Peggy for the last 15 years, as Peggy’s health slowly declined. For the past 6 years, Peggy was a resident of Westfield Nursing Home, where she died on December 14, 2023, from the diminishing effects of dementia. Peggy’s sister Carol and brother-in-law Bruce managed her care for many years from West Lafayette, and then Judy and the staff of Westview were Peggy’s wonderful caregivers and medical support thereafter. The family would like to thank Judy and the Westview staff for their kindness and friendship. Peggy is survived by her sons Danny and Doug Saladee, grandson Douglas Saladee, sister Sharon, sister-in-law Velma, and many nieces and nephews who remember her fondly and hold our memories of her in our hearts.
