Coach Short was my freshman and JV coach in high school. He was undoubtedly the best coach I’ve ever had. He could correct you and point out mistakes without belittling you and always was looking to help you improve. I really appreciated him as a coach and the older I got I really appreciated the advice he gave about life. When I watch a game today I often find myself asking what coach would have done or thought about a particular play. Some people just make a lifelong impression on you Coach Short was such a person.

Jack was always a good neighbor. But when we first moved into the neighborhood I was so afraid I would wreck into his fence in his front yard. I had nightmares about it for years. He kept his yard so perfect that neighbors said he used a broom to sweep the grass off the lawn after he mowed. He definitely challenged us all to be good stewards of our neighborhood. RIP dear neighbor. You will be missed.

I did not personally know Jack. But as a ‘61 Needmore High School graduate, I’ll always remember a Jack as one of the best basketball players to come out of Lawrence County. My condolences to his family from a former Hilltopper.

I had Mr. Short for Drivers Ed (lecture and simulator class). He was an amazing teacher. After Driver's Ed, I became a teacher's aide for him until I graduated in 1981. I remember him taking time off because Barbara was ill. He would always tell me he had nothing to worry about, knowing I would make sure all his grades were put in the grade book and everything was ready for the sub teacher. I went to BNL a few times during my freshman year at IU just to visit. He was an amazing man, I hated that we lost contact after I moved away from Indiana; but, I do know he will be missed. Carmen and Camilla, please know your dad was very well loved by many.

Way back into the late 1960's Jack was a teacher and coach at BHS. Needless to say, we didn't get along well and eventually had an encounter that led to me being permanently expelled from BHS. This was directly due my rebellious attitude and arrogance. Many years later, after he had retired, I went to look at a car he was selling, I bought it. We talked about how my life had worked out. I told him I had went into the Military just a few short weeks after leaving school and it was by far the best thing I ever did. I think he was proud of me, and I certainly had much more respect for him. Jack served his community well. R.I. P. Mr. Short.

Blessed to have known you, though it was a short time. Heaven is much brighter today from the smile that I know is on your face. May you enjoy spending eternity with your beautiful bride you've been missing for so many years. God bless you, Jack. Love you.
