Obituary of Carl Loran Fields

Carl Loran Fields, age 89 of Addison, TX and most recently of Palmetto, FL, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Carl was born on October 14, 1931 in Lawrence County, IN to Charlie and Violet (Pierce) Fields. He graduated from Fayetteville High School. He was joined in marriage to Marie Cobb on February 2, 1951 in Avoca, IN. Carl joined the Air Force in 1951 and served for four years where he was trained as an Air Traffic Controller. He began working for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller at the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Indianapolis, IN in 1960 and retired in June of 1989. Carl and Marie then moved to Florida where he spent an additional 10 years as an instructor at the ARTCC in Miami, FL. He was active in church and served as Church Secretary-Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, song leader, and board member. Carl and Marie were founding members of Cornerstone Worship Center in Bedford, IN and Bethel Family Worship Center in Indianapolis, IN. He enjoyed golf, yard work, and traveling in his motor home with the love of his life, his wife Marie. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Charles Jr and Cecil), a sister (Maggie Fisher), and one son-in-law (Roger Dowd). He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marie; four children; Carolyn Dowd of Euless, TX, Janice (Gary) Mosier of Broken Arrow, OK, Teresa (Doug) Carpenter of New Palestine, IN, and Carl David (Mary) Fields of Farmers Branch, TX and by one brother, Allen Wayne Fields of Springville, IN. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Brian Dowd, Lisa Ivey, Jennifer Hendrix, Gary Mosier II, Tim Dowd, Amy Emerson, Stacey Carpenter, Dani Agre, and Connor Fields, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Carl was loved and respected by many people. One long-time friend spoke for many when he said, “…I appreciate his great life; he is one of my heroes.” Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 22nd in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, 1133 Lincoln Avenue, Bedford, IN 47421 with Rev. Carl David Fields officiating. Visitation will be from 12pm until the hour of service on Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will follow immediately at Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca.
