Obituary of Harriet T. Harman
Harriet T. Harman, 89, of Bedford passed away at 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at Stonebridge Health Campus.
Born on May 8, 1929, in Bedford, she was the youngest daughter of Edward and Iona (Quackenbush) Tyree.
A 1947 graduate of Bedford High School, Harriet received a BA in English from Indiana State University and a Masters in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University, Bloomington. She was a Speech Pathologist in the Lawrence County school system for over 30 years where she started the speech correction program in all of the county schools as well as the Mitchell schools. After consolidation of the schools, she continued working as a Speech Pathologist at Parkview and Dollens elementary. Harriet was an avid reader and writer. She authored several plays that were presented at Parkview as well as a number of poems. She was known around town for the “little red car” (a 1977 Camaro) that she proudly drove. Harriet was a member of the Southland Church of Christ where she taught the ladies Wednesday night bible class for many years. In addition to her local contributions, she was a member of the Indiana Speech and Hearing Association where she chaired several committees and served as vice president of the Association for two years. Harriet received the Honors of the Association in 1987 for her innovative work and dedication to the profession.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Howard (Bud); one son, Robert and wife, Deborah; and one grandson, Michael; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael; and sisters, Dorothy Shirley and Doris Evelyn Tyree.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 18th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bud Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Thursday, April 18th at the Day & Carter Mortuary
