I grew up with my Uncle who was only 5 years older than me, although this week I’m learning that it was actually 7 - for some reason I always thought it was 5.
I adored him. He was the most fun uncle anyone could have. I remember playing Crazy 8s on weekends we visited Mamaw, paddling around in leaky plastic kids boats in the summer at the lake. playing lego houses and matchbox cars in the front yard in the little narrow paths of dirt through the grass from where Papaw used to try to get rid of the moles by pouring gasoline down their holes. And he loved cars. Every time we visited there were new model cars in remarkable detail. We would be driving through town and he would suddenly get all excited about seeing a ’58 blah blah blah blah blah blah.” The cool thing about having a 5 or 7-year older uncle was he got to drive first. In the summers Darci and I would stay with Mamaw for 2 weeks and John would drive us everywhere. And there were lots of Christmases. Like the time he yelled to my Aunt June “how’s the diet been going?” completely unaware as she walked in the room and sat down holding a huge desert. The entire room broke out laughing. Well it was Christmas.
We used to have great talks, I remember how joyful he was that night he told me he was getting married the first time, I also remember and how sad he was years later the night he told me he was getting divorced. I regret we didn’t stay as close as we got older, loosing him is a real shock. He’s a model of how to build great family and community in your life. He will be missed terribly. They just don’t make fun and warm people like him anymore.

John always made me smile and his personality was over the top. I am not sure the first time we met but I think it was through Englewood Baptist years ago through youth rallies as I went to Fayetteville Baptist. You have left these old dirt roads of earth for streets of gold in heaven but you have left us way to soon my friend. You will be missed.

How terribly missed this kind and gentle man will be! His heart was as big as any fellow I ever met and I was blessed to have him as my dear cousin. He is certain to be with Jesus now however sad I am that he is gone from us on this earth. Our only consolation is that we will see him once again some day!
