Mr. Armstrong was my firth grade teacher. There were some things I learned that year.
I learned if you are going to farm in Lawrence County you need to have sharp management skills or you need to purchase some of that idiot proof land north of highway 40 which probably explains why my farm is three miles north of highway 40.
Math problems in his class seemed way to easy if you look out the school window and see a green 1960 Chevy one ton truck with a standard bed and sides, loaded side to side and front to back with market steers headed for the Indianapolis Stock yards after the first recess bell rings and you are in the month of April how many dollars will you net. The first thing I learned here was how to do my hundred weights. I learned if you want to have the grand champion steer at the country fair, you need to know who had the best line of cows and you need to know who they are willing to sell their offspring to. It took me almost to the end of the school year before he disclosed this information and I am not going to tell where to go but but as I remember his first name was Teddy.
I learned education is important. I learned a person needs options and an education might provide those options.
My mother always asked every evening what I learned in school that day and after the first few days of responses like the above, the questioning came to an abrupt stop. I guess she was looking for answers about reading, writing and arithmetic, not asnwers about what was going on in the in between times.
I seem to remember somewhere along the way in my younger days my parents going to Hawaii and abandoning me with the Armstrongs. If you are going to be abandoned the Armstrongs was a good place to be. After my parents came back they talked about the pilot shutting the engines off over the Pacific. I only shutter to think of the impact that might have had on Don and Rose if the engines on that airplane had not restarted.
It was a sad day for me when Don Armstrong stopped teaching at Needmore but may there were other students that benefited from his know and teachings at the next school. Mr. Armstrong was certainly one of my best teachers along the way.

I am very sorry to hear of of Don's passing.I remember having Don for Principle and Teacher during 5th and 6th grades. I respected Mr. Armstrong (and his paddle) greatly. He was a kind-hearted and good man. I feel don's life was a fine example of how to lead a good Christian life. He will be remembered fondly by many.

My parents, Roger and Mary Grafton and we 5 children lived on the farm in Popcorn adjacent to the Lowder Cemetary. Don was an important figure in my childhood. We saw him and Rosie at the Popcorn church every Sunday. He came to many of our school productions and ball games. He was a valued mentor and community role model for the young people in our county. When I remember my childhood with great fondness in Popcorn, his face (and Rosie's) pops into my memory. If memories are lasting, his influences are forever. My deepest sympathy to the family. Margaret Grafton Ellison (and for my sibs, Marthanne, Sue, Robert and Merrilou)

My prayers go out to you. I feel compelled to share a funny story. I had only worked for what was then ASCS and now FSA for a few weeks when I was sent to Bedford to shadow Don as a part of my training. This was in the fall of 1982. I had been in the office but just a short time when Don got a call from a neighbor. He told me to "come on" and that we were going to take a "field trip" out to his farm. He told me on the way that the bull was out and that I could help him get bull back in. The bull was returned to the pasture and Don mended the fence with the hammer and steeples that he had in the trunk of his car. I will always remember Don as mentor with a heart of gold.
