Obituary of Doyle A. Cobb
Bedford Doyle A. Cobb, 87, of Bedford, died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, FL with his family by his side.
Born June 17, 1924 in Needmore, IN, the son of the late (John) Edward and Laura Mae (Sasser) Cobb where he was raised and educated with nine other siblings. He attended Needmore High School and played on the varsity basketball team. Doyle joined the U.S. Navy on March 23, 1943 after his five brothers had enlisted; he decided he did not want to be left behind. His basic training was at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. He was stationed in the South West Pacific and served on the U.S.S. Barnes aircraft carrier as a Gunners Mate. He was stationed in Brisbane, Australia where he met the love of his life, Adele Byers. They married on August 25, 1945 in Australia and were together for over sixty-six years. Adele survives him. Doyle was the owner of The Toggery in downtown Bedford, Indiana until 1981. He also owned several businesses in Bedford throughout his career. He was Superintendent of the Bedford Parks Dept. and also worked with the Life of Kentucky Insurance Co. in Louisville, KY.
He loved his family and watching them grow and succeed. He was quiet and shy but a very positive person who always had time to talk and share his experiences and guide you. He was a big advocate of higher education and encouraged all his children to attend college.
Surviving with his wife, Adele are two sons, Ronald D. Cobb and wife, Sue, of Vallonia and granddaughter, Sarah; Michael E. Cobb and wife, Helen of Melbourne, FL and granddaughters, Rebecca and Emily; three daughters, Ann A. (Cobb) Ford and husband, Bob, of Melbourne, FL and granddaughters, Aimee, Amanda and grandson, Dr. Robert C. Ford III and five great grandchildren, Madison, Christian Kai, Shaelen,, Skylar and Brooklyn;daughter, Robyn L. (Cobb) Garland and husband, John of Midland, MI, grandsons, Dr. Joshua P. Garland and Jeremy Garland, J.R., and granddaughter, Jordan and great grandchildren, Nicholas, Jack, Jace, Kali and Konnor;daughter, Deborah D. Cobb of Bedford, IN and grandchildren, Melissa D. (Bridwell) Blackwell and Melinda G. Bridwell and great-grandchildren, Braydon, Bria, Brenlee and Addelyn; two sisters, Phyllis (Cobb) Kirk and Bedford, IN and Helen (Cobb) Thompson of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Ernest, Elmer Ray, Emery, Everett and Earl Cobb; two sisters, Nancy (Cobb) Brinegar and Myrtle (Cobb) Matzweski. Funeral Information
A memorial service and celebration of life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 3rd in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post #33American Legion. Doyles family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 2nd at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Donations Information
