Obituary of Delena June Turner

Oak Ridge, TN Delena June Turner, 87, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, tiptoed away on September 3, 2011. Mrs. Turner, known as Dee was born on June 18, 1924 in Bedford, Indiana to Kermit Paul and Catherine Dillman Smith. She married Paul William Turner on October 6, 1941 at New Albany, IN and was married to him until he died on February 2, 1985. Mrs. Turner graduated from Bedford High Shool in 1941. During her life, she loved to travel and visited twenty-seven countries around the world. She lived in Abadan, Iran where her husband was in charge of welding operations at the Abadan Oil Refinery. Oak Ridge, Tennessee was also her home for many years. Her children, Jimmie D. Turner and Linda Turner Hamilton, graduated from Oak Ridge High School. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Girl Scouts of America. She was also active in politics. She was an avid lover of all creatures great and small, especially the cats she kept as pets. She liked crocheting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. During her later years, she lived at Frank Callahan Towers and delighted in organizing and cooking for community socials. She is survived by her son, Jimmie D. Turner and his wife, Judy McNew Turner of Olvier Springs, Tennessee and her daughter, Linda Turner Hamilton of Hallandale Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Lee Turner who died from spina bifida in his infancy. She is survived by brother, Donald DePierre and sister, Joanne Wray. She was preceded in death by siblings, John Buddy DePierre, Stephen DePierre, Betty Robbins and Madge Smith. She is survived by a cousin who was like a sister, Delores Turner. She is survived by grandchildren, Joy Turner Vittone and husband, William Vittone, Cynthia Turner Lawson and husband, Donnie Lawson, Shannon Paul Turner and wife, Amanda Turner of Tennessee, Troy Turner Hamilton and wife, Gisela Hamilton, Michelle Hamilton Lara and husband, Victor Lara of Georgia, Heidi Hamilton Anderson and husband, Eric Anderson of Florida. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Abigail Vittone, Phoebe Paredes, Karly Turner, Zach Turner, Victoria Lara, Christian Salas, Alek Turner, Jacob Vittone, Emilie Hamilton, Madelynn Lara, Matthew Anderson and Colin Lara. Funeral Information A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 10th at Day & Carter Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the hour of service on Saturday, September 10th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Donations Information The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the Spina Bifida Assoc.
